Rates and Markup

Proper rate configuration ensures your bids are profitable. BuildWorkPro lets you set markup, overhead, labor rates, and tax at the bid level.

  • Markup percentage — Applied on top of your direct costs. For example, a 15% markup on $10,000 in costs produces a $11,500 bid price.
  • Overhead — A separate percentage to cover general business expenses like insurance, office rent, and vehicles.

You can apply these globally to the entire bid or override them on individual line items.

Set hourly rates for different labor classifications:

  • Journeyman — Your standard skilled worker rate.
  • Apprentice — Reduced rate for apprentice-level labor.
  • Foreman — Higher rate for supervisory crew.

Labor rates factor into line items tagged with the Labor mark. When you update a rate, all associated line items recalculate automatically.

Configure tax settings for your bid:

  1. Set a tax rate percentage.
  2. Choose which line items are taxable (materials are typically taxable, labor often is not).
  3. Tax calculates on the subtotal of taxable items.

The bid summary at the bottom shows your total broken down by subtotal, markup, overhead, tax, and grand total. Review this before sending to make sure your numbers are right.
