Frequently asked questions

Where do these construction material prices come from?

From the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Producer Price Index, the government’s monthly measure of what domestic producers receive for their goods. We pull the series for lumber, concrete, steel, copper wire, drywall, glass, asphalt and roofing each month and publish the changes, a chart and the raw data.

Are construction material prices going up?

In August 2026, the BLS index for construction materials overall rose 10.1% from August 2025 and rose 0.3% from the month before. Individual materials move very differently, which is why each one has its own page.

Is this what I will pay my supplier?

No. Producer prices come before distribution and retail markups, and supplier prices follow them with a lag. Use these pages for the trend, for how long to hold a bid price and for escalation clauses, and use your supplier’s quote for the number on the bid.

How often is this updated?

Monthly, after BLS publishes the Producer Price Index for the month before, usually in the middle of the month. The latest four months are preliminary and BLS revises them, so recent figures can change slightly.
