Deck Calculator

Enter the deck size and layout to get decking boards, joists, hangers, ledger, rim and beam lumber, posts, footing concrete and screws. Add your own prices to get the installed cost, then add the deck to an estimate.

Deck

One rectangular deck on a ledger: joists run out from the house to one beam on posts, and the decking runs parallel to the house.

Decking

5.5 in is the face of a 5/4 × 6 or 2 × 6 board. Follow your decking manufacturer’s spacing for the gap; the default is Trex’s 3/16 in (0.1875). Waste of 10% is a typical allowance for boards laid square to the joists.

Beam, posts and footings

Footing depth is set by your local frost depth and code (IRC R507.3 and R403.1.4.1), so get the number from your building department. Beam plies, post spacing and footing size come from your span tables; 8 ft and a 12 in footing are typical starting points, not limits.

How it’s calculated

The layout. One rectangular deck fastened to the house with a ledger. Joists run from the ledger out to a rim joist, carried near the outer edge by one beam on posts. Decking runs parallel to the house, across the joists. Deck area is length along the house × projection.

Decking. Rows = (projection in inches + gap) ÷ (board face + gap), rounded up, because n boards leave n − 1 gaps. Linear feet installed = rows × deck length. A row no longer than a board takes one board. A longer row takes whole boards plus a short piece that butts over a joist, and the short pieces are cut from boards that yield as many as fit. Waste goes on top, rounded up.

Joists and hangers. Joists = (length in inches ÷ spacing, rounded down) + 1, which includes both end joists. The length to buy is the next even stock length at or over the projection, never under 8 ft; anything over 20 ft is flagged. One hanger per joist at the ledger.

Ledger, rim and beam. The ledger and the outer rim are each the deck length. The beam is the deck length × the number of plies you enter.

Posts, footings and concrete. Posts = (length ÷ max post spacing, rounded up) + 1, with one footing each. Each footing is a round hole: π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × depth. The full volume is divided by the bag yield from Quikrete’s Concrete Mix data sheet (0.30 cu ft for 40 lb, 0.45 for 60 lb, 0.60 for 80 lb) and rounded up. Nothing is deducted for a post set in the hole.

Screws. 2 per board at every joist it crosses, plus 2 more at each butt joint where a second board end lands on the joist. IRC R507.7 calls for two screws or nails per support on wood decking; composite boards follow the manufacturer’s pattern. With hidden fasteners, count clips from the maker’s coverage chart.

Price. Material is quantity × your unit price for each item you priced. Labor is deck area × your rate. Nothing is priced with numbers you did not enter.

Not sized, not counted. The calculator does not size framing. Joist spans (R507.6), beam size and plies (R507.5), footing size (R507.3.1) and the ledger connection (R507.9) come from the IRC or your local code. Ledger bolts, post bases and beam connectors, flashing, blocking, stairs and guards are not in the count. For the rest of the job, the construction estimate template lays out material, labor and subs by section.

Lumber prices. Framing lumber moves month to month. The lumber price trend shows how far it has moved since you last priced a deck.

Frequently asked questions

How many deck boards do I need for a 12 × 16 deck?

Built 16 ft along the house and 12 ft out, with 5.5-inch boards, a 3/16-inch gap and 10% waste, it takes 26 rows of 16-ft boards: 416 linear feet installed and 29 boards to buy. Turned the other way, 12 ft along the house and 16 ft out, it is 34 rows of 12-ft boards and 38 boards with waste. Rows longer than your boards need a butt joint over a joist, and the calculator counts the short pieces.

How many joists do I need for a 16-foot deck at 16 inches on center?

Thirteen. Divide the length in inches by the spacing and add one for the end: 192 ÷ 16 is 12 spaces, so 13 joists, counting both end joists. At 12 inches on center it is 17, and at 24 inches it is 9. Every joist hung from the ledger takes a hanger, so the hanger count is the same.

How many bags of concrete per footing for a 12-inch × 42-inch hole?

A 12-inch round hole 42 inches deep holds about 2.75 cubic feet. Quikrete’s data sheet puts an 80-lb bag of concrete mix at about 0.60 cubic feet, a 60-lb bag at 0.45 and a 40-lb bag at 0.30, so that hole takes 5 bags of 80 lb, 7 of 60 lb or 10 of 40 lb. The depth is set by your local frost depth and code, not by the calculator, so get the number from the building department.

How many deck screws per square foot?

About 3.5 with 5.5-inch boards on joists 16 inches on center, at 2 screws per board at every joist. The 16 × 12 example deck takes 676 screws for 192 sq ft. At 12 inches on center it is about 4.6 per square foot. Hidden fastener systems are counted from the clip maker’s coverage chart instead.

How big a gap should I leave between deck boards?

Follow your decking manufacturer’s spacing, because it changes from product to product and is often a warranty condition. Trex calls for 3/16 inch side to side on its composite boards, which is the calculator’s default, and 1/8 inch end to end when it is above 40°F. Wood boards move with moisture, and pressure-treated boards that are still wet from treatment shrink as they dry. The gap changes the row count, so enter the one you will use.

Which way should decking run?

Across the joists. On a deck hung from a ledger the joists run out from the house, so the boards run parallel to the house, which is the layout this calculator counts. IRC Table R507.7 ties joist spacing to the decking: 5/4 wood boards that run across more than one joist bay allow joists up to 16 inches on center when laid square to them and 12 inches when laid diagonally. Composite boards follow the manufacturer’s span rating.

Does the calculator size the joists, beam and footings?

No. It counts material for the layout you enter. Joist spans come from IRC R507.6, beam sizes and spans from R507.5, footing size from R507.3.1 and the ledger attachment from R507.9, or from your local code and the American Wood Council’s DCA 6 deck guide. Check those first, then enter the joist spacing, beam plies, post spacing and footing size they call for. Ledger bolts, post bases, flashing, stairs and guards are not counted.
