Stair Stringer Calculator

Enter the total rise to get risers, treads, total run, stringer length and the board to buy, checked against the IRC. Add your own prices to get the cost, then add the stair to an estimate.

Stair

Rise is finished floor to finished floor. Tread depth is the run of one step, nosing to nosing. Width is outside to outside of the outer stringers.

How it’s calculated

Risers. Total rise ÷ your maximum riser height, rounded up to a whole number of risers. The riser height is then total rise ÷ risers, so every riser is the same. The IRC maximum is 7 3/4 in; enter a lower number for an easier stair.

Treads and run. Treads = risers − 1, because the top step lands on the upper floor and that floor is the last tread. Total run = treads × tread depth. Tread depth is the run of one step, nosing to nosing, so the nosing overhang is not added on top.

Stringer length. √(total run² + total rise²). The board to buy is that length plus your extra for trimming (12 in is a typical allowance, not a rule), rounded up to the next standard lumber length: 8 to 20 ft in 2 ft steps, per the Southern Forest Products Association’s specification guidelines. Longer stringers are a special order, and a flight that long is usually close to needing a landing.

Stair angle. arctan(riser height ÷ tread depth).

Number of stringers. (stair width − 1 1/2 in) ÷ maximum spacing, rounded up, + 1, so the outer stringers sit at the edges and no gap is wider than the spacing on center. The IRC sets no stringer spacing. The 18 in default is the American Wood Council’s DCA 6 deck guide maximum for cut stringers under 2× or 5/4 treads (Figure 29). Use your tread maker’s span if it is shorter.

Drop. Cut the bottom of each stringer down by one tread thickness so the first and top steps come out the same height as the rest. This assumes the stringer bears on the finished floor. If it bears on subfloor before the finish floor goes down, subtract the finish floor thickness from the drop.

Throat. The wood left below the notches is the board depth less riser × tread ÷ √(riser² + tread²). Dressed depths are 11 1/4 in for a 2 × 12 and 9 1/4 in for a 2 × 10. DCA 6 calls for at least 5 in on deck stairs (Figure 28), and limits a cut stringer to 6 ft of horizontal span between supports, so a longer deck stair needs a post or a landing under the stringers.

Code check. Riser 7 3/4 in max (R311.7.5.1), tread 10 in min (R311.7.5.2), 3/8 in max variation between the largest and smallest riser or tread in a flight, width 36 in min (R311.7.1), headroom 6 ft 8 in (R311.7.2), 151 in max rise per flight (R311.7.3), and a handrail on one side at 4 or more risers (R311.7.8). These are 2021 IRC numbers. The 2024 IRC moved them to R318.7 and the handrail rules to R320 without changing the limits. Your local code may amend them, and commercial stairs follow the IBC.

Price. Material is stringers × your board price, treads × your tread price and, for closed risers, risers × your riser board price. Labor is risers × your per-step rate, or your lump sum for the stair. Nothing is priced with numbers you did not enter.

Frequently asked questions

How many steps do I need for a 9-foot rise?

A 108 in rise, finished floor to finished floor, takes 14 risers of 7 11/16 in. 13 risers would be 8 5/16 in, over the 7 3/4 in IRC limit. With the top tread at the upper floor, that is 13 treads, and at 10 in each the stair runs 10 ft 10 in.

How do you calculate stair stringer length?

Stringer length is the hypotenuse of the total run and the total rise: √(run² + rise²). For a 108 in rise and a 130 in run that is 169 in, or 14 ft 1 in. Add a little for trimming the ends and buy the next standard length, here a 16 ft 2 × 12.

What are the IRC limits for stair rise and run?

The 2021 IRC sets a 7 3/4 in maximum riser (R311.7.5.1) and a 10 in minimum tread, measured nosing to nosing (R311.7.5.2). The largest riser or tread in a flight can be no more than 3/8 in bigger than the smallest. The stair must be 36 in wide (R311.7.1) with 6 ft 8 in of headroom (R311.7.2), and one flight can rise no more than 151 in between floors or landings (R311.7.3). The 2024 IRC keeps these numbers under R318.7. Some states and cities amend them, and commercial stairs follow the IBC instead.

How many stringers does a 36-inch stair need?

3. The IRC does not set stringer spacing, so the calculator uses the American Wood Council's DCA 6 deck guide: cut stringers no more than 18 in on center under 2× or 5/4 treads. Across 36 in, outside to outside, 3 stringers land at 17 1/4 in on center. A 48 in stair takes 4. Use a closer spacing if your tread maker calls for it.

What does dropping the stringer mean?

Cutting the bottom of the stringer down by the thickness of one tread. The stringer is laid out with equal risers, but each tread sits on top of it. Without the drop, the first step is a tread thickness too tall and the top step a tread thickness too short: with 1 1/2 in treads on 7 11/16 in risers, 9 3/16 in at the bottom and 6 3/16 in at the top, far past the 3/8 in the code allows. If the stringer sits on subfloor before the finish floor goes down, take the finish floor thickness off the drop.

What is the steepest stair the IRC allows?

The code limits riser height and tread depth, not the angle. At the limits, a 7 3/4 in riser on a 10 in tread, a stair climbs at 37.8°. The 9-foot example, 7 11/16 in on 10 in, climbs at 37.6°. Deeper treads make the stair easier to climb and the run longer.
